Are You a Candidate For Dentures?

Did you know that around 1/4 of adults over the age of 65 are missing all of their teeth? Dentures are a common and respectable solution to missing teeth. They are so dependable and natural-looking that you’ve probably spoken to someone with dentures and didn’t even know it.

So, if you’re vying for a new, beautiful smile, how do you know if you’re a good candidate for dentures?

To be a good candidate for this restorative treatment, you should:

  • Wish to replace several or all of your teeth.

  • Need lost lip support

  • Not smoke or use other tobacco products.

  • Have a healthy jawbone (we can help you with this!).

  • Not suffer from dry mouth.

  • Be prepared to take good care of your dentures at home.

  • Continue to visit the dentist for routine dental check-ups – just like with natural teeth!

How do I take care of my dentures?

The best way to take care of your dentures is to go for routine cleanings and examinations. Even patients with perfect prosthetics need to visit their dentist from time to time. During your visit, we will take a look at your dentures and how they fit.

We’ll also examine your gums, tongue, jaw, and mouth inside and out. In short– we care about your oral health. Not just your teeth.

To care for your dentures at home:

  • Remove dentures overnight to let your mouth rest.

  • Soak dentures in warm water with or without denture cleanser.

  • Do not soak dentures with metal clasps in anything but warm water.

  • When not wearing dentures, keep them in water so they don’t dry out and warp.

  • DO NOT soak in hot water.

  • With dentures removed, clean and massage your gums.

  • If your toothbrush hurts your gums, run it under warm water or try using a finger wrapped in a clean, damp cloth.

  • If you have partial dentures, brush your natural teeth as usual.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are a partial or complete replacement for missing teeth that can be adhered into place and removed for thorough cleaning.

These prosthetic devices are supported by the surrounding oral cavity tissues. Traditional dentures are removable, while other designs may depend on attaching to dental implants or natural teeth.

Types of Dentures

Complete Dentures

A complete or full denture is a removable appliance that can be used in case all teeth within a jaw have been lost. They can be used to replace missing teeth in both the upper and lower jaws, to restore the natural appearance and function of your teeth.

Unlike a partial denture, this prosthetic replacement is constructed whenever there are no more teeth in an arch, and is exclusively supported by the tissue.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is made to replace one or more missing teeth and are entirely removable and affordable. They’re made up of one or more artificial teeth held in place by clasps that fit onto nearby natural teeth.

Removable partial dentures restore your smile and can help you regain confidence, as well as restore the full functionality of your bite, allowing for increased self-esteem and enjoyment of food.

Dental Implants for Denture Support

If you have a weakened jawbone, you’ll need to start with dental implants before getting dentures. The good news is that dental implants boast a 98% success rate, proving themselves to be the most effective restorative treatment option.

Implant dentures are placed on top of those dental implants which secures them firmly into place. They can be removable or permanently fixed and are a cost-effective solution to replace many missing teeth at once.

Denture Relines and Repairs

Sometimes, denture issues happen unexpectedly. That’s why we aim to provide our patients with one-day denture repairs in Ottawa.

Our service aims to minimize the inconvenience of going without dentures for a prolonged period of time, whether due to chipping or breakage. In more serious cases, one or more teeth may need to be added to an already existing denture due to wear and tear or after a tooth extraction.

The Treatment Plan

There are many reasons a tooth may require removal. They include (but are not limited to) the extraction of baby teeth that have trouble exfoliating on their own, the extraction of teeth for orthodontic treatment, and the extraction of teeth due to pain or infection.

A dental extraction removal usually requires one office visit and is performed by a dentist. Here is how we go about extracting the tooth:

Note: Looking for Solutions

You may think extraction is the only way to find relief or feel like it is inevitable, but there may be other ways to quickly provide relief while saving the tooth.

The main priority is to keep you healthy, relieve any pain, and preserve your tooth. Before we remove any teeth, we will examine you and speak to you about your options.

The Removal Process

Based on the preference of the dentist and the patient, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the areas where the tooth will be extracted.

Sedation may also be available if it’s required. We use a minimally invasive technique to remove teeth as gently as possible, as we want you to feel comfortable and enjoy fast recovery.

Post-Extraction

You will be given aftercare instructions for the healing period, including instructions on how to care for your mouth as it heals, what to expect, and what to do if you experience complications. We would be happy to schedule a follow-up appointment to address any additional concerns you may have.

Cost of Dentures in Ottawa

In Ottawa, you can expect to pay approximately $900 – $3500+ for full or partial dentures. The cost of dentures varies widely because there are dentures to suit different needs.

Full-mouth dentures can cost anywhere from $1,800 to $3500 and up. The cost for a full set of implant-supported dentures averages out to about $30,000 as a ballpark estimate.

How is the cost of dentures determined? Here are some important factors:

  • The type of denture you need.

  • Dental extractions or other required preparations.

  • X-rays that may be needed.

  • Whether or not you get supportive implants.

Every case is different—that’s why it’s important to speak with a dentist and get an oral exam so we can evaluate your unique situation and provide you with different treatment options to consider. After your free consultation, we will be more equipped to offer a more accurate quote.

Contact Us Today to Schedule an Initial Consultation & Exam

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite.

Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment, we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there other solutions for missing teeth?

Dental bridges can be used to restore a gap caused by 1 to 3 missing teeth. Any number of missing teeth can be restored using dental implants. Dental implants typically have a higher initial investment cost and certain health requirements to qualify as a candidate for treatment.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures usually last between 5 and 10 years before they need to be replaced. However, the more care involved and the more dental visits you book, the more likely you can extend their lifespan.

Is it okay to sleep with dentures in?

It’s recommend to sleep without your dentures in to avoid any bacteria buildup in the mouth, which can lead to gum disease. Since bacteria in our saliva increase during sleep, sleeping with dentures can increase that growth.

How do I know if my dentures fit right?

Dentures should stay in place regardless of if you’re smiling, eating, or talking. If there is ever any pain or discomfort, you should stop wearing them immediately and contact a dentist. Fitting dentures requires a dentist to do the job, so you don’t end up with any complications later on.

What foods should be avoided with dentures?

The rule of thumb is to avoid foods that are hot, sticky, acidic, crunchy, and tough, as these will damage your dentures. Some examples include citrus fruits, hard candies, sticky gum, hot coffee, tough meats, and nuts.
