Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) provides crucial dental coverage for eligible Canadians. If your family’s net income is below $90,000 and you lack dental insurance, you could benefit from the CDCP. This plan covers various oral health care services, making it easier for you and your loved ones to maintain excellent dental health.

Who Qualifies for CDCP?

To be eligible for CDCP, you must:

  • Have no access to any dental insurance.

  • Have an adjusted annual family net income below $90,000.

  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

  • Have filed your tax return in the previous year.

Patients currently receiving dental benefits through social programs may also qualify if they meet all eligibility criteria. For more detailed eligibility information, visit Canada’s website.

Coverage and Co-payments

While the CDCP covers a significant portion of dental costs, it may not cover everything. Depending on your income, you might need to pay a percentage of your dental treatment costs. Here’s a breakdown of coverage based on adjusted family net income:

  • Income below $70,000: No co-payment; CDCP covers 100%.
  • Income $70,000 – $79,999: 40% co-payment; CDCP covers 60%.
  • Income $80,000 – $89,999: 60% co-payment; CDCP covers 40%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a government program designed to provide dental care coverage for Canadian residents who have an adjusted family net income below $90,000 and do not have access to dental insurance. The plan covers a range of oral health care services to ensure better dental health for eligible individuals.

Who is eligible for CDCP?

To be eligible for CDCP, you must:

  • Have no access to any dental insurance.

  • Have an adjusted annual family net income below $90,000.

  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

  • Have filed your tax return in the previous year.

Individuals covered by other government dental programs may also qualify if they meet all eligibility criteria.

When can I apply for CDCP?

The application process is being rolled out in phases:

  • Seniors aged 65 and above: Applications began in December 2023.

  • Adults with a Disability Tax Credit and children under 18: Applications open in June 2024.

  • All other eligible Canadians: Applications will be available in 2025.

How do I apply for CDCP?

You can apply for CDCP through the Health Canada, Sun Life, or Canadian Dental Association websites. Upon approval, you will receive a welcome package with a member card, co-payment details, and your coverage start date.

What services are covered under CDCP?

The CDCP covers various dental services, including:

  • Routine cleanings (scaling, polishing, sealants, fluoride treatments)

  • Examinations and X-rays

  • Fillings and root canal treatments

  • Complete and partial removable dentures

  • Oral surgery services, including extractions

Some services require preauthorization, which begins in November 2024.

How much will I need to pay under CDCP?

The amount you pay depends on your adjusted family net income:

  • Income below $70,000: No co-payment; CDCP covers 100%.

  • Income $70,000 – $79,999: 40% co-payment; CDCP covers 60%.

  • Income $80,000 – $89,999: 60% co-payment; CDCP covers 40%.

You may also need to cover additional costs if your dentist’s fees exceed CDCP established rates.

Can I pay for my dental care upfront and be reimbursed by CDCP?

No. Dental providers participating in the CDCP must submit claims directly to Sun Life. Patients cannot be reimbursed by the CDCP for payments made upfront.

What if I have coverage through other government dental programs?

If you are covered under other government dental programs (such as Healthy Smiles Ontario or the Ontario Disability Support Program) and are eligible for CDCP, your benefits will be coordinated between the programs to avoid duplication.

How do I find a dentist who accepts CDCP?

At Fallowfield Dental, we accept CDCP patients. When booking an appointment, confirm that the dental provider participates in the CDCP to ensure your coverage is applied correctly.
